New knitting and yarn stuff

May 31, 2007 at 8:35 pm (art yarn, fiber, spinning, yarn)

Yeah, I know – it’s been forever, i’m a bad blogger. Tough crap. I have been doing some knitting stuff as of late, so lets get to checking that out.

I finished hubby’s socks, but they were quickly whisked away, and as soon as i find them I will get a photo.

I saw “we call them pirates” and had to make it for hubby. Took me 2 days to do the B&W, and now i’m making the lining. I did use the Hauk yarn, since he works construction outside. I think i’m going to line it 3/4th’s of the way instead of just a few inches. I’m using leftover sock yarn for the inside. I think a pair of the mittens will be made for me :)

I’m pretty proud of how nice the inside turned out.

have more pic’s of my art yarn, now that it’s a scarf and gifted to the MIL. She did like it allot, I hope she wears it. Word to the wise, go to estate sales, pile everything up together, get one lump price – you will come home with a trunk load of yarn!

I got some more fiber from the pusher to spin up for some socks. I have been spinning up the sheepshed studio b&w stuff for now, trying to get better at spinning more consistently, since it is so cheap i can really go to town on it.

I got one of these spinners control cards, and i really like it, but I recommend a wpi tool also as it is more acurate.

The goods I got from the estate sale! The bin is full of nothing but novelty yarns, then the small bin is crochet cotton, and under that are tools, patterns and more! All for $50!! Score!

My first batch of yarn on my spinning wheel, 2 ply merino/viscose blend.

My first Navajo ply attempt also a merino viscose blend. It’s only my second batch done on my wheel! There are some pigtails but oh well.

I really do like the art yarn, I will take better pictures of it this weekend. I bought pluckyfluff’s book not too long ago, and it was really inspiring to do something different. Since I got a Louet S10 it has a nice big orifice and is great for art yarns, those are what inspired me to buy a wheel to begin with. I think soon I will put some up on Etsy, or on here to sell. It’s hard to part with something that you put so much creativity into though. This newly acquired stash was great to have stuff to make art yarn with, so I went to town!

I have a whole ton of black and white mill ends from the sheepshed studio that i’m going to make some stuff with, some sock yarn, some punky yarn with red random stuff added in. Maybe make some mittens out of it. Mostly for socks for Mr. P to wear to work.

I did some dyeing a few weeks back, dyed 8 oz’s of sock yarn red black and blue, and dyed some superwash wool sheepshed threw in as a little “bonus”, they really are wonderful!

This guy is my main fiber pusher, Until sheep shed i have bought no fiber from anywhere else (except the fiber festival) but from him. He is so awesome. He has an ebay store Let me tell you, he is the nicest guy ever! He works so hard, his dyed stuff is phenomenal! Truly a gem! Really the best there is. Really! His prices are great too. He does heat with wood and coal, and you can sort of smell it at first in the fiber, but once you wash to set the twist – that’s all gone immediately. He does live in New York state for crying out loud!

I am looking to get a bunch of undyed yarn to do some more batches of sock yarn, and looking to get a ton of roving to dye too. I got a good enameled roaster at the estate sale for $2 , so now I can steam or dye in the oven whichever I prefer. Yay!

Working on that sock for Mr. P this weekend, I bet I finish #1 up by Saturday afternoon. He will love them. He’s a keeper!

welp, will write more later.

Peace!

Good day!

February 22, 2007 at 4:08 pm (estate sales, migraine, new job, yarn)

I need to post some of my knitting, spinning and dyeing pictures for you. I have lots of them. I have really excelled at them all in the last few months. I am finally very confident with it, and having a blast at it.

I went to an estate sale on Saturday that my aunt told me about. OMG the lady did quilting, knitting, embroidery and all kinds of things. I got this huge tub of all novelty yarns, a bunch of patterns, and a bunch of needles and tools all for $50! I hit the mother load, i’m tellin ya! That is how I got 90% of my knitting needles, and be sure I have hundreds of sets of needles. My mom and aunt go to thrift stores and estate sales and grab anything they see for dirt cheap. I have started quite the collection of vintage patterns from this too. This is the way to go, it is so worth the time and effort. Most estate sales are from elderly people, and most of the time they are crafters. I have found that there is usually a man out in the garage selling the tools and stuff, and if you hit him first – and ask if stuff you are interested in is in there, he will tell you exactly where to go to find what you want. Works like a charm.

I took a bobin full of merino tencel blend I had just finished up, and plyed it with novelty yarns from this bin. I also threw in mohair locks dyed in different colors, and BFL locks dyed in different colors. It turned out so beautifully I almost passed out. It is my first “art yarn” sort of thing. And it is gorgeous. I think I’m going to knit something with it for my Mother in law, she has been so wonderful to me, and the colors are all her favorites. Shades of blue, purple, grey. I will take a picture of it when I get home. I hope she doesn’t think the yarn is too obnoxious. I think she’ll like it. There’s no skulls or doll parts in there, lol.

I am knitting a pair of socks for Mr. Penelope, he’s a coldy cakes and I have had this yarn for him for quite awhile, he went to the yarn store with me and picked out more yarn than I did! (He’s a keeper). I had put it on hold to knit some darling little baby socks for my niece who is due any day now. I knitted 4 pairs of socks for her. Mommy to be loved them, two pairs were an alpaca silk blend that was heavenly to say the least.

Well, I can’t take anymore for now due to my head. I will post later.
